Durjoy Datta is an Indian novelist, screenwriter and entrepreneur. Durjoy Datta was born on 7 February 1987 in Mehsana, Gujarat but grew up in New Delhi. He completed his schooling at the Bal Bharati Public School, Pitampura and went on to do mechanical engineering from the Delhi College of Engineering now known as Delhi Technological University. He served at NIIT Ltd. Siemens AG, and American Express until he co-founded the publishing house Grapevine India in June 2011. In 2009, he was recognized as the young achiever by The Times of India. He was also chosen as one of the two young achievers in the field of Media and Communications by Whistling Woods International in 2011
It may come as a surprise to many that this young author holds a degree in mechanical engineering. “My father was a graduate in mechanical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi hence mechanical engineering was obvious choice for me. When it came to choosing the institute, Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) was the obvious choice as it is the best college in Asia for Mechanical Engineering. And so, I got here,” exclaimed Datta, who joined DCE in 2004.
SUCCESS NEVER COMES WITHOUT HARD-WORK. THOUGH I HAVE WORKED FOR WHAT I HAVE ACHIEVED SO FAR, I BELIEVE I HAVE BEEN LUCKY AS WELL. USUALLY THERE IS A SUPPORT OF LOT OF PEOPLE BEHIND EVERY SUCCESSFUL PERSON.
The initial days at college were full of fun and freedom. But as the time passed, the seriousness of engineering studies started to seep in. “I was part of several councils during my college days and organising events was always fun, along with being a highly educative experience. Organizing things at the last minute, managing both people and tasks, meeting deadlines and team work were the few things we learnt, while working in a group. And this learning, of the college days, always comes useful in personal and professional life,” said Datta.
After completing his engineering, Datta worked for Siemens for a year. He then decided to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma programme in Business Management in Marketing from Management Development Institute and was subsequently placed with American Express. However, within a few months of his job, he realized that there was a huge void in the publishing industry, which he could fill with his knowledge and expertise and that is how Grapevine India Publishers was conceived. “I partnered with my DCE classmate Sachin Garg to start Grapevine India Publishers – a community of authors, which was set up with the vision of filling the gap between the interests of the authors and the publishers.” Datta plans to take Grapevine forward and become an established name in the publishing industry.
Datta defines success as happiness. “No matter what you do, how much money you make, unless you are happy, it amounts to nothing. Unless you enjoy what you are doing and have a smile of contentment on your face at the end of the day, you are not there yet. Happiness is what matters the most,” he said, adding, “Success never comes without hard-work. Though I have worked for what I have achieved so far, I believe I have been lucky as well. Usually there is a support of lot of people behind every successful person. My family and close friends have always been there for me and it is a huge boost to my confidence. For inspiration, I just look at things around me, people around me and get inspired from the good in them.”
