Cyrus Driver was your regular Air Force child. So, going for engineering was the natural choice. Cyrus joined IIT Bombay. But he had always been fascinated by big businessmen and entrepreneurs. He felt that they were “Rockstars” in the real sense.
And so, he joined IIM-Ahmedabad, the best B-school of India. After getting his degree in the year 2000, he joined JP Morgan in their private equity division in Singapore. He thought this will be a ‘learning ground’ for him to start his own venture in the future.
In the year 2004, he quit his cushy job and came back to Mumbai to start his grind. His big idea for a business was “calorie counted meals”. He stumbled upon this unique idea as he himself faced a weight problem. And in this day and age, where people have no time to think about their diets, this seemed a very good idea. In Cyrus’ own words, “Its good to be a consumer of the product you’re planning to launch, as you don’t need to do endless market search. You know what will sell.”
Thus, “Calorie Care” was born. The company had its beginnings in the modest suburb of Sewri in Mumbai. Cyrus took a year to find out various healthy but tasty recipies. He and his team tried out each and every dish and finally zeroed down on the ultimate menu. The company mainly caters to clients from the financial services sector. The utterly healthy food is cooked and packed with great care and delivered right to the clients’ doorstep. This idea is a hit with these professionals as it takes care of their dietary needs alongwith tons of convenience!
No doubt then this company got Business Today’s “Ten coolest start-ups “ award in 2006. Also, this is a one-of-a-kind catering company in the whole of India!
The company is presently scaling up and has plans of expanding to Delhi, Bangalore and other metros soon.
The one important lesson of entrepreneurship we all can learn from Cyrus is that simply look at your needs. Think about what would work for you, like Cyrus did. Because, your need might be the need of thousands of others too. Your business idea need not be complex. It just has to be practical. And you too could soon be climbing up on the business ladder, like Cyrus.
